Keizara Part One: Dean – XchylerComn

Keizara a world ruled by gods and managed with magic. A place where the people live as one with the world around them, wouldn’t seem like a bad place to get thrown into right? Well that’s what Emmett, Courtney, and Mac thought as well. Their parents sent their three children into their home land to get help, BUT they will soon find what they need cannot be given. What they need must be earned through years of tradition, and practice.

I really enjoyed reading Keizara Part one.

Everything in Keizara is based on tradition and practice and it really got me wanting to know more about the place and how their traditions are kept alive and how they are still practised.

Even though it is short so much happens and I felt it was enough to get the reader wanting to read more about the three children; Emmet, Courtney and Mac as well as the mystical place their parents sent them to; Keizara.

Not only do we meet Emmett, Courtney and Mac we also meet Dean who is the teller of Tomorrow and Sylver who is the keeper of Stories. I found Sylver to be an intriguing person as History and stories is something I love and he really appealed to me as he is the one who knows the history of Kiezara.

Keizara Part Two: Nimala should be another great read, one I am looking forward to reading. It will take us to meet more exciting people from the history of Keizara and hopefully we will learn more about the traditions and practises of Keizara.

What a mouth watering short story.

I really enjoyed this story about Gerard. Gerard is not a typical vampire; he’s just a ten year old boy vampire.

I was so entranced by Gerard’s story. I was so amazed at how young he was and yet he was so beautiful. He came from a well off family, but without his friend Phillip life was nothing.

He is a lone vampire one the Jack Trask really felt for. There was a connection with them from the start. Gerard started playing games but then he realized that Jack wanted to know more about him and how he ended up as a vampire.

How Gerard ended up as a vampire is still a mystery and I really like that.

Frazier has written a wonderful story, one that is told from a different angle, one that is quite compelling.

The news experts at the end were a great way to finish off. It made the story Gerard finish but another mystery began. The mystery of Jack had begun, why did he just disappear? Why, when he was dying did he jump on a plane and head for New Orleans? Those questions remain unanswered in the story but we as readers know his side.

Nanna’s Storm – author = Vicki Griffin, illustrations = Vicky Duncan

A funny story about a mischievous Nanna who relives with her grand-daughters the good times she had when their mother was young.

No matter what their age, grown-ups can still have a wicked sense of humour.

Writer – Vicki Griffin

Although brought up in Sydney as a white person, Vicki Griffin discovered her Indigenous

Heritage in the early 1990’s with her mob coming from the Shoalhaven area – Darawal tribe to the South Coast of New South Wales. This inspired her to investigate her cultural and artistic talents and she began writing and painting.

Now her art hangs not only in local schools and daycare centres in the Brisbane area but also in Japan.

Discovering more of her talents in the realm of writing she enrolled at the University of New England and in 2006 completed a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Communication.

Vicki Griffin is married with four children and lives in Queensland. In 2001 she became a guardian of a Torres Strait Islander child and is leading him into his culture.

Illustrator – Vicky Duncan

Vicky Duncan grew up around Inverell in Northern NSW, Kamilaroi country, where she learned about her culture and language from her father. She has done art since a teenager.

In her early career she taught art at local schools and the South Inverell Linking Together Centre and sold her work at markets.

Vicky now works with cultural and environmental land care volunteers and as an Aboriginal advisory to the Borders River Gwydir CMA but still enjoys doing art.

The illustrations in this book are done in acrylic on paper, but Vicky also enjoys using ochres, fibres, wood and emu eggs, and designing dream catchers, tattoos and cartoons.

This story is aimed at aboriginal children, but I believe every child should have the opportunity to read this wonderful story no matter their background.

I was approached by the author Vicki to review this book a while ago. I glad to accept and review Nanna’s Storm.

Nanna’s Storm is a wonderful book. It did take me a second reading to get how the story worked but my fiancé read it once and got the idea first go (I must have been having a slow day when I first read it lol).

I found Nanna’s Storm an enjoyable read. It is beautifully illustrated by Vicky Duncan and the illustrations tell the story really well.

My fiancé and I look forward to reading this to our future children.

Mammon – J.B. Thomas

Forget anything you ever heard about exorcisms and pentagrams. The modern demon is far more difficult to catch and even harder to destroy...

Joe is a Ferryman, capable of opening dimensional rifts, while Grace’s telepathic abilities surpass anything the Order has ever seen.

But none of that will matter if the powerful demon Mammon manages to convince Joe to open a gateway to his demon world and overrun Earth with his armies.

If he succeeds: game over.

Mammon is an AWESOME first novel for J.B Thomas. It is also the first part of the Ferryman Chronicles.

There is action, love and demons throughout.

It’s on of the best books I have read this year.

Mammon is divided into three parts. Part one being where we first met Joe, who is a ferryman and his sister Grace who is telepathic. This part is all about Joe and Grace and about them learning of their abilities. Their parents really concerned for their safety and in protecting their children they are brutally killed.

In part two the children’s aunt Dianna takes her niece and nephew to Renfield where they are given time grieve for their parents. Joe and Grace are shown around Renfield and are told that their parents were once part of the Sarsareh. After their tour of the place they begin their training as mercenaries, but not without some distrust from the other mercenaries.

Joe wants to seek revenge for the death of his parents and in doing so seeks out another way to get his revenge.

The final part of Mammon is where the training is finished and they set out to bring down Mammon. There is much action throughout this part and both Joe and Grace have to use their newly trained skills to stop Mammon from opening a rift to bring his demon army into the world.

My relationship throughout was that of Grace and Ivan. Their relationship seemed to start on shaky grounds and every time Grace seemed to do something wrong it seemed as though Ivan didn’t really like her.

From the very beginning, when Grace meets Ivan I could tell she was head over heals for him. Ivan on the other hand was very focused on training his people and he showed little emotion. Eventually Ivan showed his true feelings for Grace and their relationship started to change.

For me the best part about this relationship was once they had established a love relationship when working together Ivan didn’t give Grace any special attention. He kept things focused and on the mission and not on his feelings for Grace. I found this a very important thing as he is Grace’s leader and if he let his feelings get in the way their working relationship would have to be separated.

I am very grateful for the opportunity to be able to review this amazing book. I would like to thank Dorothy Tonkin from Random House Australia for giving me opportunity.

Tangled Bloodlines – Deborah Noel

I was so excited when Deborah approached me to review her book Tangled Blood Lines. I found it a great read once I got into it. It took me a while, but it was worth while taking the time to read.

My initial thoughts to begin with was that this book was all about solving murder cases. As I read past the first few chapters I realised there was more to this story than solving murders.

There is a major supernatural element that really intrigued me. I have a love for magic and reading this story with the supernatural really caught my attention

When Shane and his girlfriend Brae capture two tracker vampires I found the story become more interesting and I found a new level to the story. There was something different about these vampires, as once they were caught and put behind silver bars and started revealing their purpose I became more interested in them.

There were three main relationships in Tangled Blood Lines. There was the relationship between Cianna and Declan, Cianna, Declan and Mattie and the relationship uncle Sam, Cianna and Declan. Telepathy was a strong connection with these relationships as well as the family bond and that of love. All three relationships stood out to me the most because of the way they all interacted with each other. Their connection/bond was so strong. I really could understand how Cianna felt for her husband Declan. Their love was so strong and so very beautiful.

After reading Tangled Blood Lines, I was left with many unanswered questions. I want to know more about the Vampires and Cianna’s history. I also want to know what happens when Mattie is found.

 This is such a fantastic read, I hope to read more books from Deborah in the near future.

If you love the supernatural you will love this book.

The Commander and Den Asaan Rautu – Michelle Franklin

What a spellbinding first book in the Haatan series!!

My imagination was captivated by Michelle’s writing. She has created a world in which I could fall into and visit for days upon days.

This book is really good as it conveys the story of the Commander who is from Frewyn and how she comes to meet Rautu who is a giant also known as Haanta.

My initial thoughts of Rautu were that he was a very arrogant person, one who is also impatient, impolite with no manners and one with little to no emotions. As the story progressed I realised he has emotions, ones he doesn’t share too openly. He seems to come across as an arrogant person because of being a Haanta. The Haanta people are very proud people and they are different in many ways to those of the Commanders people.

The relationship between Rautu and the Commander was really teasing and enticing. Rautu’s relationship begins with Boudicca during the war between Frewyn and Gallei when she lets him go free in return for his help in fighting in the war. He develops a tolerance of her and through this tolerance his feelings for the Commander deepen.

When Rautu is invited to return home he is reluctant to return without Boudicca so he invites her to visit the islands where he lives. On the journey to the islands the relationship between the Commander and Rautu deepens as he does a lot of observing of Boudicca and there are times when things start to get physical, but Rautu doesn’t pursue any physical relationship as he knows the law of his people and wants to stick by those laws.

I enjoyed seeing this relationship develop in the way it did as it felt like the Commander and Rautu are representations of their the two countries. To me they represent the two countries uniting not in love but in friendship to defend their lands from invasion from Thellis.

I have found the Haanta people very interesting as they live by many rules that are set out in a book similar to Bible. They seem happy and content to live and follow the rules set out for them.

Their way of life is so simple, one that they are all designated a purpose from a young age. The Haanta children are not raised by their birth parents. They are given a rank and are raised in the temple. These children are raised with those who have the same purpose in life. Being designated a purpose and being raised with people of that same designation sounds like a good way of life. Having only one thing to focus on is a good way to keep life simple. It does sound a bit boring but the Haanta people wouldn’t know any different as that’s all they have known.

When I learned of the existence of Magi I became very intrigued and wanted to know more about them. They really fascinate me and hopefully in the next book I’ll learn more about the Magi that the Commander took under her wing and took her to her homeland.

I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to read some adventure along with some romance.

Sorry I haven't been posting much. I have been really busy. Reading is a passion of mine, one that I don't get to do often enough.

I am a stay at home girl and I love to sew as well as reading. I sometimes wish I could read and sew at the same time LOL.

Blood Song is The First Book of Lharmell.

Zeraphina isn’t your typical princess, she is into hunting and archery. She has two pets, Leap, a cat and Griffin who is a golden eagle.

 Right from the very first page I was drawn in and  I had trouble putting it down, it was so good. I loved everything about this book epically the way it is written. With Zeraphina telling the story in first person, Blood Song is a standout book to me, because I loved the way that it made me feel like I was experiencing everything that Zeraphina experienced.

 My  favourite part throughout this book would have to be when Zeraphina gets angry at Rodden at the masquerade ball and she storms out and makes rash decisions and ends up getting on a giant bird called a brant and she winds up in Lharmell, the place no one talks about. The place that isn’t mentioned in history books in any detail.

My initial feelings after reading this book was that of being let go. I really felt that the book had a hold on me, one that wanted me to keep on reading to find out more about Zeraphina. I was taken places in this book that made me want to dive in deeper. I wanted to know the secrets that was being kept from Zeraphina, I wanted to understand why she was different and stood out from everyone else.  The story really made me feel I really want to know what happens next to Zeraphina, will her relationship with Rodden deepen?, will they find a way to stop the cravings, the hunger? These two questions came to me once I finished reading.

Since Blood Song was such a tantalizing read I rate this 5/5.

REVIEW:

The Birth of Jaiden is the debut novel for Jennifer Wright and one that is a really tantalizing read.

 I was drawn to the story from the beginning as I found it very interesting how Jennifer combined faith with vampires.  At first I struggled with the concept that Alex, the main character, is a vampire who has faith in God. I found it rather interesting how Jennifer combined vampires and having a faith in God.

When I learnt more about Alex’s past I  began to understand how he came to have faith in God even as a vampire. It made me realise that anyone, whether they be human or not have some faith in a god.

I really, really enjoyed this book. I found it to be a tantalizing read. There were so many juicy things happening right throughout the book, which really made the book so appealing to me.

Alex’s relationship with Danielle really stood out for me. She is Alex’s guardian angel and  loves him like she would any sibling.

As the story progresses we learn how Alex meets Danielle and how this relationship begins. In a way I felt that Alex’s feelings for Danielle were more than sibling love.. I did think that Alex loved her like he loved his wife but as I read on I realised that Alex was falling in love with Isabella and Danielle had eyes for another.

After finishing The Birth of Jaiden, I felt like the story had only just begun. It ended with me wanting to know more about Jaiden’s life with Alex and Isabella and whether Alex pursued an intimate relationship with Isabella.

Anyone who loves vampires will defiantly love this book.

REVIEW Burn Bright – Marianne de Pierres

Burn Bright was an amazing read. Right from the very first page I was drawn into the story. My curiosity got the better of me with this as there was so much going on that I wanted to know more.

The who story was one big adventure for Retra. Being a Seal in Ixion, she had to learn quickly about the new way of life, the life of pleasure. She had to learn that being modest in Ixion wasn’t acceptable as they were ment to be living a life of pleasure.

The night creatures were in the background, but you knew they were there, but you had no idea what they actually are till late in the book. I found them interesting creatures as I wondered why they were in Ixion and why they preferred the dark than the light.

Retra would have to be my favourite character because she was different from the others in Ixion and she was there for a different reason. Being different she stood out from the rest which made most question her reason for going to Ixion.

I really love this book. I enjoyed the whole story and I my favourite part was all the twists and turns the story took. The best part would have to be when things get really exciting near the end after Retra takes on an Ixion  name and becomes Naif. The way she changes from being a Seal to being almost the same as everyone else at Ixion was surprising as I thought it would be hard for Retra to break all her Seal training of silence.

After reading this I felt the book wasn’t over and that another exciting adventure is to come.

Angel Arias is the next instalment of the Night Creatures and I am really looking forward to seeing how the story develops. I really want to know how things will be different now that Naif  is on a different path to save those in Ixion.

I rate this 5/5 for the wonderful story and for the way it really got my curiosity  going.

Greg Hair – Author Interview

Hi Greg,

Thanks for agreeing to do this interview for Tazzie Book Reviews.

Your debut novel Werewolf was an amazing read and I was honoured to be given the opportunity to review it for you.

Q1. What inspired you to become and author? Was there something from your childhood that made you want to write?

Writing this particular book is what really put the bug in me.  I had the idea and it wouldn’t leave me alone.  I HAD to put it down on paper.  What I remember from my childhood are two examples.  First, I won a contest, coming in first place in my elementary school, where you had to an advertisement for the upcoming Halloween festival.  Second, I remember my 6^th grade teacher singling me out because of a Star Trek story I wrote.

Q2. Do you have a favourite author that inspires you? Or maybe someone in your life inspires you?

My wife and children inspire me the most.  They are the real motivation for me to keep going and continue trying to make it as a writer.  My wife has her own photography business and it’s kind of a little competition we have to see who can get the most fans.

Q3. As a writer do you have a favourite place that you like to write? Do you listen to music or have something else that helps you write?

No particular place, basically anywhere I can be alone, away from distractions.  I definitely listen to music, especially when writing certain scenes.  For example, it it’s a fight scene, I’ll listen to 30 Seconds to Mars’ The Kill, Smashing Pumpkins’ The End is the Beginning is the End, and Chevelle’s The Red.  Those are just a few.  I’ve already got particular songs picked out for the final, climactic battle, and what comes after, in the third book.

Q4. How did the idea of Werewolf come about?

From the kidnapping of Madeleine McCann in Portugal.  Being a father, I get very upset when someone hurts a child.  That’s how Landon Murphy was born.  The story was actually going a different route until I was best man in a friend’s wedding.  That’s how I met the inspiration for Ryker.  That’s also how the idea for the first chapter came about.  The wedding took place in that hotel, and that hotel room is the actual room the groom’s parents stayed in.

Q5. Did you base any of the characters from Werewolf from the people in your life? Or anyone from your past, growing up, people who may have caused trouble for you when you were in school perhaps?

Landon is me, I probably made that obvious when I gave him red hair.  But then, there’s just not enough redheaded heroes in fiction.  LillyAnna is based on my wife, while Ryker and Annelise were inspired by the groom’s sister and her boyfriend. 

Q6. What should readers expect from the next instalment; Werewolf: Ascension?

Well, here’s the tag line for it: The Stakes Have Been Raised…War Has Begun…No One Is Safe.  I will say though, that if there is anyone out there waiting for something to take place between Landon and LillyAnna, you get your wish.  And more.

Q7. When writing Werewolf did you do any research into the mythical creatures and the locations you were using in the story? Did you do any particular studies that helped you with your writing?

No research really into creatures.  I did, however, try to steer away from some of the traditional and newer elements.  I tried to make the vampires possible, like WHY drink blood?  What does that do internally?  I definitely tried to do as much research as I could regarding locations, but took some liberties regarding what you would find in that location.  Of course, I live in Louisville, so that was easy.  Burghausen, the German castle, is real, though there’s no garden like mine in it.  I’m doing the same thing for the second book.  Some locations include: Italy, Scotland, and Mexico.

Q8. When writing do you experiment with different styles till you find the style that best suits what you are trying to write?

I really like past tense, third person limited.  I pretty much stick with that.

Q9. When can we expect to see Werewolf: Ascension published?

Still shooting for a ‘by Halloween’ release.

Q10.What tips would you give to anyone starting out as a writer?

1. Rewrite, rewrite, rewrite.  2. Don’t let ANYONE tell you that you can’t, or shouldn’t, do it.  3. If you’re happy with the story, don’t change it.  It’s YOUR story (that’s why I like self-publishing).
